What is IPT?   Print  E-mail
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a short term (16 to 20 sessions) therapy that has been proven to be effective for the treatment of depression. Although depression may not be caused by interpersonal events, it usually has an interpersonal component. IPT was developed to address these interpersonal and relationship issues. The focus of the therapy is on interpersonal events that seem to be most important in the onset and / or maintenance of the depression. Usually these involve a recent transition (e.g., divorce, marriage, moving, job loss), a dipute (e.g., marital problems, difficulties at work), or a recent loss. The first 1-3 sessions of IPT are devoted to assessment and identification of the specific interpersonal issue that will be the focus of the remainder of treatment. Research has shown that IPT is equally as effective in the short term treatment of depression as anti-depressant medication therapy. IPT can also work well in conjunction with medications.
